About the World Buddhist Sangha Council

A global, Sangha-led and non-sectarian organization dedicated to uniting Buddhists across traditions and nations since 1966.

Our Purpose

Uniting Buddhists Across All Traditions

WBSC was founded in May 1966 in Colombo, Sri Lanka, as a supreme international forum to safeguard the Buddha Dhamma, promote harmony among Buddhist schools, and contribute to world peace.

The founders envisioned WBSC as a global voice of the Buddhist Sangha — a non-sectarian, Sangha-centric institution where Theravada, Mahayana, and all Buddhist traditions could meet in mutual respect and doctrinal clarity.
